Gobbler's Knob, Stockbridge - Saturday March 10, 2018
This evening we ventured to the village of Stockbridge,
about 20 or 25 miles from Appleton on the east side of Lake Winnebago, to the
Gobbler’s Knob Supper Club. We found
Gobbler’s Knob on what I assume to be the main street in this small town. There happened to be exactly two seats open
at the small and comfortably busy bar when we arrived. We
were greeted by a friendly bartender and ordered the usual, two BOFS. They were good and strong. Everyone at the Gobbler’s Knob bar was
drinking a version of the old fashioned - whiskey or brandy, sweet or
sour.
Gobbler’s Knob was established in 1949 and has been owned by
the Levknecht Family for over 30 years.
The bartender informed us that one of the women sitting at the other end
of the bar had been the owner, and that she had passed the business down to her
son, who was vacationing in Mexico. Menus arrived and we were told to
let the bartender know when we were ready to order.
The bartender, noting that we were newcomers, shared that
her favorite was the Cajun haddock and grilled asparagus. After a very enjoyable 45 minutes in the
barroom, we ordered. I went with the
recommended Cajun haddock and asparagus, and somewhat to my surprise, Paul
ordered the special, the ribeye steak Oscar. As
usual, the waitress returned several minutes later indicating we could go to
our table whenever we were ready, “no rush”, and start with the soup and salad
bar.
The dining room was small, typical for a more rural supper
club. The soups were onion and cheesy
broccoli. Both were good. The salad bar was fresh and had a good
variety. It’s good we saved some room
for the main course. I like haddock and
order it often. I cannot remember having
any I liked better than this. It was
done exactly right and the Cajun seasoning was on the lighter side. I also enjoyed the large portion of
asparagus. Paul polished off the ribeye , stating it was excellent and done to perfection!
To say we were stuffed would be an understatement. Hence, no after dinner drink. But, we observed a couple drinking
grasshoppers earlier at the bar. They
were large and certainly looked good.
Maybe next time! Gobbler’s Knob
is well worth the trip to the village of Stockbridge. We will definitely be back.
