Wally's Spot, Green Bay - Thursday May 17, 2018
On Thursday night we headed north to another interesting and
historic Supper Club, Wally’s Spot in Green Bay. Wally’s Spot has been owned by the Adamany
family since 1948. Wally’s Spot was
originally located along the Fox River on Washington street and was moved in
1969 to its current Main street location.
We arrived at Wally’s about 6:30 and it was pretty
quiet. They have a large oval bar and a
great vintage décor, including our bartender who had a large “bouffant with a
flip” hairstyle. She was very friendly
and had been there for 21 years.
According to our bartender, the current owner, Tom, is the son of the
originators and is very active in the business
The barroom had a wall of mirrors on one side, a signed Reggie White jersey
on display, and free snacks (veggies, dip, cheese, liver, and garlic spreads
and crackers). The BOF’s were good and strong.
Different than the rural supper clubs on our quest, Wally’s dining
room is more formal with white linen table cloths and finer table ware. It feels as if you are stepping back 50 years,
and if Green Bay had any organized crime figures they might meet at
Wally’s.
The waiter came to the bar and took our order. I chose the half rack of smoked ribs and Paul
went with the Cowboy bone-in ribeye, and we both ordered the twice-baked
potato. They offer a salad bar or a
Caesar salad, and the meal comes with soup as well.
As soon as we left the barroom and entered the dining room to
sit down, the waiter arrived with the Caesar salads. A crock of good French onion soup came next. The smoked ribs were served with barbecue or
honey mustard sauce on the side, but they had a great flavor without any sauce
at all. Paul’s ribeye and the
twice-baked potatoes were very good as well.
Just when we thought we could not eat another thing the waiter arrived
with a small dish of orange sherbet, a perfect light dessert.
Eating at Wally’s was a fun and unique experience. The food prices are higher than most supper
clubs, but they do offer several nice little extras to the dining experience. The bartender and waiter were very good and
friendly, and we enjoyed the vintage ambiance.
