George's Steakhouse, Appleton - Monday July 9, 2018

George Fiedler opened the doors of George’s in the late 1930’s.  In the early days, patrons would stop in to meet friends or to be entertained by Pal, George’s German Shepherd – whom legend tells, could use the jukebox and cash register. The barroom includes a 125 year old Steinway concert grand piano that is still used for sing-alongs on weekends.

In 1960 George sold to Dod and Eloise Guyon, who then sold to Lou Neuville in 1973.  In 1976, the business was sold to the current owners, Chuck & Edie Quimby. Their son Brad joined his parents in operation of the steakhouse in 1985.

Even though it was a Monday in the summer, George’s was pretty busy.  We sat at the cozy bar and ordered our usual Old Fashioneds.  They were good.  Our bartender happened to be an acquaintance from the days when our children were playing soccer, so we visited with her and enjoyed our drinks.  She provided menus and said we could move to our table whenever we were ready.   At George’s they don’t take your order at the bar.

George’s is a “city” Supper Club.   The décor is vintage 1960’s for sure, and the dining room walls are adorned with paintings, not fish or deer antlers.

George’s is a steakhouse, so Paul ordered the New York Strip Special with a baked potato and I went with the Stuffed Tenderloin (Rice) with Bernaise.  Dinner included an appetizer bar, soup and a salad.  The appetizer bar included the standard liver pate’ and cheese spreads.  We’ve concluded that all Supper Clubs have the same source for these items.  They are all good, but all pretty much the same. The soup options were tomato bisque and chicken dumpling.  I went with the tomato and Paul had the chicken dumpling.  Both were good.  Somewhat uniquely, they offered a French bleu as one of the salad dressing options, which I chose and enjoyed.  My dinner was good, the steak was good, but I felt the rice filling was a little bland.  Paul’s steak was excellent.

George’s has been around for about 80 years, and not much has changed since we had our wedding rehearsal dinner there 30 years ago this October. Definitely worth a return trip!
