Millhome Supper Club, Kiel - Tuesday October 9, 2018
On this Tuesday evening we made the drive to Kiel to visit
the Millhome Supper Club. We don’t know
much about this establishment except that it is named after the town of
Millhome, which is about three miles away from Kiel on the Sheboygan River, and
has been family owned since 1979. It is
a large place with three banquet rooms for weddings.
We arrived about 7:15 and it was very quiet at the bar. We ordered our usual BOF’s, sweet for Paul
and press for me. Unfortunately, our
bartender was very busy doing other things so we didn’t get a chance to ask
about the history of the place.
The menu is large and has some interesting dishes. After finishing our drink, we entered the
dining room and observed that there was some kind of meeting going on in
one area as all the tables were filled with men. Our waitress seated us away from the group
and informed us that it was the mink breeders association. I didn’t even know there was much of a market
for mink anymore but apparently there are a number of breeders in the Kiel
area as they filled most of the dining room.
I ordered the Red Snapper and garlic mashed potatoes and
Paul ordered the steak (ribeye) and shrimp with garlic mashed potatoes. The Millhome salad and soup bar was really
good and included cold shrimp which was an unexpected surprise. Paul tried the barbecue chicken soup which
was different but very good.
The Red Snapper was lightly seasoned and very tasty. No garlic was spared in making the making the
potatoes, but I like garlic so I enjoyed them. The steak and shrimp combo was
very good as well.
Overall our experience at the Millhome was good, the bar and
dining room are nice and the food and service were good. We didn’t get a chance to talk with any of
the owners or learn about the history, so it seemed to lack a bit of the charm
and character that we find in many of the smaller town supper clubs.
